Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the world’s best-known architects, was born in Wisconsin. Many of his buildings still stand there.

Wisconsin Republican senator Joseph McCarthy was the architect of an intense anti-Communist period, which was inspired by the Cold War.

The 20th Century and Beyond

Over the course of the 1900s, agriculture continued to form the backbone of the state’s economy. Dairy farming became a popular alternative to wheat production, which severely depleted the soil of nutrients. In northern areas of the state not suitable for dairy farming, logging and timber-related industries took hold. However, the overenthusiastic harvesting of trees from the late 19th through the early 20th century left the northern forests of the state nearly decimated; only now are they recovering. The lead and zinc mines that once flourished became depleted in the 20th century, and over time they closed, the last one in 1979. Meanwhile, tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing emerged as the driving forces in Wisconsin’s economy—as they are today.
